On October 28, 2013, Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida met with Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, who is now visiting Tokyo. Both of them brought up their interests to advance cooperation on cybersecurity between Japan and the EU. (footnote:1) They also confirmed that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso will hold a Japan-EU summit meeting to discuss international security issues and economic cooperation in Tokyo on November 19. Japan and the EU started to have an annual summit meeting back in 1991. The three leaders are likely to discuss cooperation on counter-terrorism and cyber defenses. (footnote:2)
