According to the Sankei Shimbun online on September 22, 2013, the Japan-ASEAN special summit meeting will agree on their cyber defense cooperation this December in Tokyo. The Japanese government will start working with ASEAN countries to identify hacked computers and servers and delete malware from them with their owners to prevent further damage expansion in Japan Fiscal Year 2014, which is from April 2014 to March 2015. The countries will also agree on implementing joint cyber exercises.

Japan and ASEAN are expanding their cybersecurity cooperation recently. They held their first Ministerial Policy Meeting on Cybersecurity in Tokyo between September 12th and 13th, 2013. Marking the 40th year anniversary of the partnership, Japan and ASEAN countries are hosting various cultural and policy events this year.

Their joint ministerial statement, which was released on September 13, emphasizes on creating a secure environment for business and information and communication networks. Japan is committed to expand the JAPAN-ASEAN Security PartnERship (JASPER) to the ten ASEAN countries. The JASPER consists of two projects, the Proactive Response Against Cyber-attacks Through International Collaborative Exchange (PRACTICE) and malware infection alerts. The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) funds the research and development of a technology to gather cyber-attacks-related information and share analytical information to respond to incidents. As of today, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand started to provide information with the MIC. The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology started to disseminate incident alerts to Japanese customers in June 2012.

The joint statement also includes the expansion of Japan-ASEAN cybersecurity cooperation through academics, Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs), and Internet Service Providers to exchange expertise. The ministers mentioned about cyber exercises to enhance cyber defense and information-sharing but the document does not specify how to conduct such exercises.

On November 12, 2014, the 17th Japan-ASEAN Summit Meeting was held in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, and the leaders adopted "The ASEAN-Japan Joint Declaration for Cooperation to Combat Terrorism and Transnational Crime," which covers cooperation to counter cybercrimes. The countries will increase information to share regarding the trends of cybercrimes and lessons learned, and enhance cooperation on cybercrime investigation and prosecution through the existing channels such as the International Criminal Police Organization-INTERPOL, G8 24/7 Network, and the electronic ASEANAPOL Database System (e-ADS).
