On August 8, the Cyber Crime Control Division under the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department released the most updated statistics of cyber crime-associated consultations between January and June 2013. The number one consultations are regarding online scams and frauds except for Internet auctions (35.2%); the second is regarding aspersion, black mailing, defamation, or the leak of personally identifiable information (21.3 percent); the third is regarding damages caused by hacking or malware (14.4 percent); the fourth is regarding spam emails (4.4 percent); the fifth is regarding illegal or malicious websites or online bulletin boards (3.9 percent); the sixth is regarding damages caused by Internet auctions; and the others are 17.9 percent. The top six is the same in 2012 and the ratio of each category is almost the same. The first was 35.0 percent, the second was 20.6 percent, the third was 10.4 percent, the fourth was 5.0 percent, the fifth was 3.4 percent, the sixth was 2.6 percent, and the others were 23.1 percent. (footnote:2) The police department has not provided its analysis of the cyber crime tendency.
The Metropolitan Police Department established the Cyber Crime Control Division in 2000. The Division consists of three teams: one to serve as a point of contact to receive cyber crime-related consultations from citizens and governmental organizations; one to provide support and guidance regarding cyber crime investigation for local police stations; and one to crack down cyber crimes that use sophisticated technologies.
