April 7, 2014: Prime Minister Abe and Prime Minister Abbott agreed to launch Japan-Australia Cyber Policy Dialogue at their summit meeting in Canberra.

 

February 13, 2015: The Japanese and Australian governments held their first meeting of the bilateral Cyber Policy Dialogue in Canberra and discussed international challenges such as the development of international norms and the application of international law. The representatives also covered potential areas of cooperation including building confidence through regional and international for a such as the ASEAN Regional Forum, combating cyber crimes, protecting critical infrastructure, providing cyber security for major events such as the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, and assisting capacity building in Asia-Pacific countries. The meeting was co-chaired by Ambassador Takashi Okada and Assistant Secretary Ian Biggs. Participants are from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), National Center of Incident Readiness and Strategy for Cybersecurity (NISC), National Security Secretariat, Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office (CIRO), National Police Agency (NPA), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and Ministry of Defense (MOD), Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Attorney-General’s Department, Department of Communications, Australian Federal Police, Australian Crime Commission, and Australian Signals Directorate. The Japanese government plans to host the second meeting in Tokyo in 2016.
